Lexii Takes Montego Bay

January 27, 2017

Traveling to Montego Bay, Jamaica this past December for my 25th Birthday was such a liberating experience. Well, not really. My flight to Montego Bay was delayed a whole day. While my friends were out soaking up the sun and swimming with Dophlins, I was stranded in Fort Laudadale Florida but that’s a different story for a different day.

However once I made it through customs. I remember feeling anxious to get to the resort and see my college friends and enjoy Jam Rock.

The ride from the airport to the resort was so beautiful. There was beautiful blue water, clear skies, Bob Marley melodies, jerk chicken aroma in the air and gorgeous spirited people.

Day 1: After I dropped off my suitcase, my friends and I went straight to the beach, took pictures and rode safeways.  Unfortunately one of my friend’s luggage was missing therefore we had to make numerous calls to the airport trying to locate her belongs. Hours and hours later we finally tracked it down. Later that evening we tried out the Jamaican nightlife. We had a great time, jamming in Jamaica.

Day 2: We woke up at 7am, and rushed breakfast so we could catch our shuttle bus on time. We had the best tour guides ever; they talk us about the history of Jam Rock for the food (if you don’t have goat at your wedding you’re look down upon), the language, the way of living etc. There were lots of morals of Bob Marley, wild animals, open land and beautiful clear blue bodies of water. Once we reached Hand and hand my friends and I climbed Dunn’s River Fall. Our waterproof phone cases and fanny packs saved our life and is one of the most important items that were packs because we were able to capture every moment without missing a beat.

Next stop was Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.  We rode the sky lift for 45 minutes to get to the other side of the mountain where the rest of the activities were such as Canopy Zip Lining, live dancing, Jamaican Bob sledges and a restaurant.

Our 45-minute ride over the gorgeous ocean, green trees and the melodies of nature was breathtaking.  We were 700 feet high and praying for a safe ride and landing.  My sistah-friends and I laughed, jokes prayed and laughed, joked and prayed. Once we reached out destination we went straight Mystic Dining and had jerk chicken and fries.  Shortly after, we hopped in the bobsleds and reenacted “Cool Runnings”. It was so cool being on a mini roller coaster in the middle of a rain forest!

Once the ride ended,  we heard music, feet tapping and hands clapping. My friends and I ran over to dance! This was my favorite part of the trip. I had the chance to let go, be free and jam in Jamaica. At that moment, my only focus was to enjoy the moment. Check out our moves.

Next, we went zip lining. That was one of those " you only life once" moments. I stepped out of my comfort zone and step into a really uncomfortable yet secure harness. I remember feeling like there were butterflies in my stomach dancing to "Juju on that beat". Once I zipped down the first line, I felt so relived until I found out I had to go down 5 more lines to get down the mountain. Like all things practice makes perfect. I grew more and more comfortable with this activity. It was liberating to have the opportunity glide through the forest in Jamaica.

That evening we ate at “Creole Rastaurant". I ordered fish unaware that they would bring out a whole fish including the fish head. Luckily, they cut out the eyeballs. To my surprise the dish was remarkably tasty!

Day 3: I spent the majority of the day at the beach soaking up the sun, sand, sound of the waves and taking lots of selfies and pictures and catching  up with my college friend who I only get to see via facetime because we all live in different states. Girl time is always good for the soul, Bennett College taught us that!

Day 4: We spent the day exploring. We shopped at locate gift shop malls, bought ice cream, souvenirs and visited the 7 mile beach. It was such a beautiful sight to see. The sun was setting, the weather was beautiful and the water was so clear! It was truly remarkable to see nature take it's course and just be nature.  I remember thinking "I don't want to leave this place". I already can't wait to return!

Day 5: It was my birthday and I was heading back to LA. The whole ride home I remember reflection on my trip, thanking God for this experience and so much more. In spite of the mishaps getting to Montego Bay, this was one of the best vacations and birthday ever!
